Black Widow

Everyone is afraid of the black widow. She has even earned a name in the world of comic books. And all from such a tiny creature. If people were to take time to understand spiders, there wouldn’t be so many incidents of “spider bites.”

Spiders, including the black widow, simply want to be left alone, like most animals. And if their space is invaded, they respond with a little nip—a bite. Some bites are harmless; others not so. It happens that the bite of a black widow can be painful as heck, and sometimes even deadly.  no different.

But we shouldn’t be surprised or offended. People are no different. If a stranger walks into our house unannounced or uninvited, we “bite” too. Maybe not literally bite, but oftentimes we do worse. People shoot strangers all of the time. A black widow is doing no differently. She is defending her home, and more than likely protecting her babies.

The image above is one I took of a black widow outside my office door. She had a sac full of babies next to her. We safely scooped her up and relocated her and her babies to the woods nearby.
