Cornbread, the Rehab Dog

our labrador "rehab dog" who we adopted from a rehab center

What Is a Rehab Dog?

That’s a good question. And maybe Cornbread is a first, but somehow I doubt it. Every animal on the sanctuary has a story. Cornbread’s story is a long one, but I’ll try to sum it up.

Our youngest son had major problems with drugs. After many years we got him into a rehab center, and it was during my weekend visits that I became introduced to Cornbread.

Nobody knew where he came from or who he belonged to. All they knew was that he would show up there every morning about breakfast time and he’d hang out with the guys in rehab. He stayed all day, religiously attending their outside meetings, and stealing keys or packs of cigarettes, or anything left on the picnic benches. Usually the items were deposited in the water fountain.

Everybody Loved Cornbread

After about two months I grew fond of him, and he would give me an enthusiastic greeting whenever I visited my son. And then I learned the rehab center was going to call the Humane Society. They had tried to find out where he lived, but weren’t successful, and they didn’t want him hanging around the center all day. Apparently they had a few complaints.

So…my wife and I took him in, and we’ve never regretted it. Corny has a lot of stories, which you’ll get to read about, and quite a few good pictures. We don’t know exactly when he was born, but we guess it was about January of 2009.
